Back up your data

Back up your data again

and then later - Back up your data again, again

The problem may be a spurious error reading the drive,
or it may be the first indications of the drive, memory, PSU or motherboard
failing

I presume that you have checked that you did not have a floppy, CD, DVD or
USB device attached during that boot attempt

Until the problem becomes more of a regular thing on the PC there is not
much you can do other than ensure you have adequate backups of your data and
the OS partition.

And even when it does become a permanent boot feature you will still have
very few options.

Check how old your system is, how old the drive(s) are , are they still
within warrantee

If it does become almost a permanent feature try disconnecting the CD/DVD
drive
other than that the next best option is to 'clone' your system to a second
drive, and keep either the first or that second drive out of the system so
you can use it instead of the normal drive if the system does refuse to boot

Also find, or create a booting floppy, USB stick? and a booting CD to test
the system will boot from a different device to the hard drive

Is there a local PC store that you could take the thing to to get them to
fix it when it does fail
Expect to pay at least $50, or £50 for them to examine it and tell you what
has failed

Then consider new systems cost about £300 (without screen) but complete with
WinXP-Home
