I always do the "see if it happens again" part no matter what. But do make
sure your backups are good, while you're up and running, as James suggested.

During the fall when the average house temp falls, it's typical to see
intermittent and one-time problems as connectors and other hardware adjust
to new temps when powered off. And the temp change can also push components
that were ready to fail into failure.

If the problem persists, I'd start by removing and re-installing the data
cable on the hard drive, at both ends.

You can also try a simple restart shutdown (without power off) to verify
that rebooting while fully warmed up is good. When you finally get to your
shutdown test, try powering on immediately. If that's good, try it again
but let the system cool down for 30 minutes.

When I opened the message, I found that Carl Houseman had written:

No can do, Carl! There isn't anything in the drives......however it
does sound like it's "looking" at a bad disc (I remember that sound
from the old days).

Thanks,

Jim
