Like you I've bought commercial DVDs of all my commercial VHS tapes only because the VHS was in 4:3 & the DVDs are in 16:9 widescreen so I can watch the tapes on our old TV & the DVDs on the newer widescreen.

I wouldn't blame anyone that recorded commercial cassette tapes to cd or commercial VHS to DVD citing fair use laws & as long as they don't sell the copies that they've made & I don't believe that they could get into trouble. OBTW there are many commercial VHS tapes that will never get to DVD because they never sold enough of the those VHS tapes to make it worthwhile.
