Was it:
Not only back within the system configuration,
but also useable..

Could be that the device driver within windows is being used to probe for
the device, and giving a negative response, causing windows to remove the
device from it's configuration.

So - BIOS and basic start-up hardware process says found it as an IDE
device,

Windows looks to see what it's doing, gets a 'Duuuurrr wot Cd-DVD drive?'
response from the device driver and discards the Bios supplied information.

Could be time to check if the device functions as an audio player
Then do as suggested earlier by Rick..
Check the warrantee, remove the existing drivers and re-install them

But before you start - check you have a proper backup of your system, and
appropriate install CD drivers for the hardware, OS, and any applications
you installed that may use the drive, as well as any updates/fixes for that
software
and - check if the drive works at each stage in the re-install, not just
when you have installed everything
