I cleared out previous calls to the IE and everything seems fine now.

Can you click on links in mail messages?
When IE doesn't work correctly, it's often a symptom of
spyware/adware/trojan/virus/etc infestation. Since you wrote about
attempting to repair your machine in Recovery Console, maybe the best
approach would be to describe everything that's not working correctly with
this machine.
