Boot into recovery console and do a
   CHKDSK /F
at the C: prompt. Then reboot.

If no help, do a repair install of XP.

A repair install is generally safe and harmless to data files, programs, and
user settings. However, if you have important data that is not backed up -
i.e. you can not afford for the hard drive to go up in flames in the next 30
seconds (which is unlikely but always possible), then you should make plans
to backup your data first.

When the PC is turned on it comes up and it says: unmountable boot volume
"If this is the first time you have seen this screen, restart your
computer.
"
" If this screen appears again, Follow these steps: "

I do the steps that it says and it brings me to the same screen...
Jerry.

If you want to edit boot.ini, you don't need recovery console. You can do
that with
(Start/Run) sysdm.cpl / Advanced / (Startup and Recovery) / Settings / Edit

Recovery console functions are described in match #1 here:
http://www.google.com/search?q=recovery+console+commands
(check out "bootcfg")

Generally speaking, you should only be in Recovery Console when you know
what needs fixing and Recovery Console is the only way to fix it.

As always, we're ready here to try to diagnose your problem if you'll
describe it the symptoms.

Subject: Boot.ini

I have an interesting situation. I don't have the XP CD so I used the 6
diskettes I downloaded awhile back and used them to get to the recovery
console.
Only problem was that it wanted my administrative password and I never set

one, so I just hit enter and pushed on, but then it just left me with a C
prompt and nowhere to go. So, I figured I'd edit boot.ini and hopefully
fix the
problem, only thing is that I couldn't find any edit program anywhere,
does

anyone know if I can do an edit at that point in time, or if not that,
anything else I should have done or tried to do to get my XP repaired?
Thanks, Jerry.
