A similar thing happened to my son's HP Pavilion laptop.
From the symptoms, it acted like the Sasser worm, but none of
the telltale files were present. XP's Repair Console would not
run, so I wound up repartitioning the free space and doing a
fresh XP install to the new partition. This allowed me to recover
the data from the old partition, and bought me some time
until I can analyze the problem at a later date, and to build an XP CD with SP2 slipstreamed.

You will have to borrow an XP CD in order to try the Repair Console or to attempt a repair install.

My daughter has a Compaq Presario 1500 notebook computer (XP Home, SP2). Up
until today, it has worked fine. Today, it boots to the Windows XP screen
and stays there indefinitely, or shuts itself down and begins rebooting. The same thing happens if we try rebooting to Safe mode or any of the other options in the boot menu. We do not have the original disks for this computer. I would attempt to go to a restore point, but I cannot get to System
Restore.
