Shuts down as in power off?

I've heard of Toshiba laptops that would shut themselves off when
overheating. If the CPU cooling fan has failed or is running too slow, that
could be the situation here. Or there could be a build-up of lint or dust
in the cooling fins/passages.

And if not that, there's some other hardware thing gone seriously wrong.

At this point I'd be removing the hard drive to recover data if there are no
recent backups. You can get a little external USB case for a laptop hard
drive for about $10.

Well, I found an XP Home CD, started the boot from CD. It began to boot,
loading different files. When it gets to the part where I can choose the
Recovery Console, I select it and it asks which Install of Win I want to
repair.

There is only one listed. I hit enter and the machine shuts down.

You need to get your hands on a Windows XP CD or download the 6 floppy kit
from Microsoft so you can at least get into Recovery Console and see if
there's anything to recover.

If you have a choice of XP CDs, you'd prefer one with Microsoft labeling
that came with a new computer, and matches your version (Home or Pro) and
already at SP2. The least important thing is SP2 - you can use an earlier
version to try to fix the computer. If it doesn't match any of the
preferred attributes, you can still use the CD to access the Recovery
Console.

6 floppy download:

Recovery console is accessed by pressing the R key after booting the XP CD
or 6 floppies.

Once into Recovery Console the first thing you want to do is a CHKDSK /R.
If things are fixed, repeat it and see if anything more gets fixed. If you
continue to see things get fixed each time you run it, the hard drive may be
shot.
