No, you'll at least need a cable adapter to plug in the 2.5" hard drive from
the laptop to a standard IDE cable used with 3.5" hdrives.

You can find the $10 USB case at acortech.com, right on the home page, free
shipping too.

I suspected heat, also. We are letting it sit and cool for a bit.

I will look into a USB housing. I have a Firewire housing for normal sized
EIDE drives. Can this be used?

Thanks,

Shuts down as in power off?

I've heard of Toshiba laptops that would shut themselves off when
overheating. If the CPU cooling fan has failed or is running too slow, that
could be the situation here. Or there could be a build-up of lint or dust
in the cooling fins/passages.

And if not that, there's some other hardware thing gone seriously wrong.

At this point I'd be removing the hard drive to recover data if there are no
recent backups. You can get a little external USB case for a laptop hard
drive for about $10.
