can you secure the 2½" drive within the housing,
or, guarantee that the drive will not be violently (it's impression of
violently) moved while it's powered up

I have been hanging hard drives by their IDE and power cables for years and none, 3.5" or 2.5" have wiggled or tried to get loose while they were spinning. In many situations one end of the hard drive can rest on a surface, but when I hang them high (as a slave to a CD device) they have no support other than the IDE and power cables.
