I've been beta testing and using norton products such as NG 10 and NAV 2006
just recently and other versions for many years and I can personally state that
from my experience with using these products that eventhough some if not all
norton products have gotten resource intensive and that some products have
incompatibility problems they are still very good products.

Yes Norton products have been known to cause memory resource and
incompatibility problems but that shouldn't neccessarily mean that people
should dump the product and waste money doing it. Symantec has a very extensive
tech support page on numerous tech issues in which nearly all the tech
bulletins solve such as a user on this list who had a problem with installing
GoBack as a part of Norton SystemWorks 2006 suite does. The TB stated that
GoBack 4.1 as part of the SystemWorks 2006 suite isn't compatible and doesn't
support systems with multi-boot partition environment.

The solution: Uncheck GoBack when installing NSW 2006
skip or start the virus scan
                      Click next
In the Norton SystemWorks setup panel click Custom
                      click next.

A very simple solution and I credit Symantec tech support for such good work.
Some people may have such problems with the Symantec products becuase they
don't follow these very simple rules:

1. Research: ALWAYS check your system hardware specs and ALWAYS read the system
requirements first before
you buy the software. Is your OS current and does it support the software?
Do you have enough hard disk and memory space to install the software? Many
people will erroneously assume that well since I have Windows XP Sp2 and 256 MB
of RAM and 200GB hard disk space then it should run it. Not allways true
becuase other common software like antivirus scanners, antispam filters and
even some disk partitioning software like Partition Commander can break the
installation no matter what memory or disk space that your system has. Even
older versions of NSW 2000 - 2005 can break a NSW 2006 install which as usual
require you to uninstall the older versions first as with other Norton products
themselves. After all You did check these things out first didn't you? ;)

2. RTMF (Read The Manual First) ALWAYS check the documentation for any adendums
or additional updated information in the manual as it will point you to first
read the readme.txt file on the CD. Many people tend to either ignore this or
other additional information, discard it definite NO! NO! or simply don't know
that its there to help you. Did you RTMF? I always do myself of course.

3. ALWAYS check and read the readme.txt file on the CD which also alerts the
user about incompatibilities with other versions of either Norton or other
software that they may be using on their system.

4. Never rush the installations: Many users cause installation problems
themselves when they rush install becuase they didn't check their hardware and
system specs and in the end waste money on tech supp calls. This is why
software packages come with instruction manuals don't they? Rush installs may
be fine for smaller simpler applications such as WinZip and others in some
cases but not for big and complex software suites or other packages like Norton
SystemWorks 2006. Don't blame the software company's tech supp for a problem
that you caused becuase you didn't read the instructions first.

5. Check the software manufactures website for support and or tech issues that
you may encounter either before or after installation.

Rule number 6 my personal favorite: Always follow rules 1 - 5 above and you may
rarely have to suffer from a naging software problem again. ;)

In my opinion, people who install Symantec Norton software are asking
for trouble. Over the years, Norton products have gotten very resource-
intensive, often cause incompatibilities with other software, and are
very difficult to uninstall cleanly. There are competitive products that
are a better choice.
