Is there an app that'll [relatively simply] let you know which apps are *using* the network? I use TCPView [from systeminternals] all the time, but the one thing it won't tell me is whether the connection is _active_ or not [e.g., I invariably have several ssh sessions open, all mostly idle, but there's no way [I can see] to tell that from the tcpview screen].
