If the desktop is XP then you want to be disabling the XP firewall, or reconfiguring the XP firewall to permit file sharing access. The XP firewall isn't really needed when the machines access the Internet via a router.
As regards your configuration before/after... Wireless routers provide two functions: 1. Router - providing Internet access to the LAN. TCP/IP packets are routed between the LAN and the WAN (Internet) connection port. 2. Access point - connects wireless clients to the LAN. No TCP/IP routing is involved. You can think of wireless clients as connected to another switch port and therefore part of the LAN. Your original configuration with ICS and dialup was "access point" mode. Your new configuration is "router" mode. The phrase "Internet gateway" would also identify that the router is performing its namesake function. At that time, the desktop system was set to run DHCP and "Internet connection share" its dialup connection, and it was connected to the LAN via a 10/100 line to the Wireless Router, which was set to 'router' mode. The current setup is that the router is set to "Gateway" mode, with the satellite connection on its "Internet" connection and it is basically working just fine: both my laptop and my desktop can "wireless" out to the network. BUT: my laptop can no longer do anything with the 'shared' stuff [file system and printer] on the desktop. I can't remember what I did on the desktop in the first place to get the sharing stuff to work [mostly nothing, I think...:o)] but whatever it is, something needs to be tweaked.. ???
