Hello Rod, I have had this problem on several machines, not Compaq !! In each case I have had to resort to booting from a floppy disk and then wiping the HDD before I could get the machine to boot from the CD drive. I even tried an external USB CD drive on one machine without success, even though it happily booted from a USB floppy drive.
Don't know about the machine not recognising a new hard drive though !! All the ones I have played with simply auto detected it, including the external USB HDD/CD/floppy drive.
