Hello Rod,

I have had this problem on several machines, not Compaq !!
In each case I have had to resort to booting from a floppy disk and then
wiping the HDD before I could get the machine to boot from the CD
drive. I even tried an external USB CD drive on one machine without
success, even though it happily booted from a USB floppy drive.

Don't know about the machine not recognising a new hard drive though !!
All the ones I have played with simply auto detected it, including the
external USB HDD/CD/floppy drive.
