Perhaps I'm missing something; if I count the pins on the
mobo's IDE connector it's 40. and the Asus' manual also
mentins: IDE connectors 40-1 pin; is there some
concealed information I'm missing?

For a while now IDE devices are 40 pin but the cables are 80 conductor with the odd conductor acting as shielding. If the drive has a 40 conductor cable inside then I would say that could be your problem. There are some cases that are only meant for ATA33 [40 conductor cable] older drives. Sorry but it's buyer beware kind of thing. Some where in the manual or on the box that it came in it should say whether the drive is ATA 33, 66, 100 or 133.

The enclosure comes with a "smart cable" called "USB
2.0 to IDE".

Is this the external cable or the cable that is inside the enclosure? I would bet that the external cable is just a usb cable & the cabling inside somehow an IDE cable & that there is a chip somewhere that makes it "smart".

I'm not sure how to check firmware since it
seems to be only usb 2.0 driver. I could check this on the
second box with the working Samsung How can I check
this?

When I connect my firewire drive to a system it shows the bridge board chipset & version # besides the firewire card that is in the system.
