Sometimes two wrongs can make a right...
Did you check or repair both ends?
"Sometimes" cables do not "have to be" "standard",
as long as "the mistake" was made on both ends...
I have seen cross-connected optical feeds "correct"
themselves by having a double cross-connect...
(Slightly different I know, but the same general idea...)
