Possibly your pop-up program is a Winfixer impersonation, or a new edition designed to escape detection.
I know of those forums where volunteers work one-on-one with folks to remove scumware, and I think it shouldn't be necessary except for novices. So, I have written up an all-purpose scumware removal procedure. It depends only on free 3rd party software that keeps working forever. I'm interested in having anyone with "hard to fix" scumware try it out to see if it's as good as I hope it it is. The procedure will take some time - several hours more or less depending on the age/speed of the machine. If you're on a dialup connection you will also spend several hours just downloading the 3rd party software. So... if you (or anyone else) are willing to follow steps meticulously and report back results, drop me a private E-mail, and I'll send you the URL. I do ask that you only request the URL if you have a problematic system to fix, and that you not re-distribute the URL. After I get a bit more feedback and incorporate any improvements the feedback suggests, I'll announce the URL publicly. A web search shows this to be a common spyware. The Symantec site has a 3 page description of the files and Registry items that should be deleted. I meticulously went through each & every item Symantec lists and NONE of them were present on the wife's computer! I did a comprehensive web search using "remove Winfixer" or "uninstall Winfixer" and checked out dozens of "hits" that in the end were not helpful. The one hit that did seem to solve the problem was a HijackThis forum where an infected person, under the direction of the web master, ran three different programs & repeatedly sent a HijackThis log file to the forum with feedback for each log file from the master. I printed out this thread and it was 15 printed pages!! I tried to find a software application that clearly said it would remove all traces of Winfixer and found none. Does anyone have a known solution???
