Hi Eve,

It's not clear what your friend wants for this laptop (unless I missed a detail) - a wireless link or a wired link.

If wired, then any PCMCIA card similar to the one you mentioned below (10/100 MB Ethernet Cardbus PC Card) should do the trick, connected to an ADSL modem/router (wireless version will be useful later). For example, I use a Linksys wireless ADSL modem/router which has 4 wired ports, 1 of which is used for the desktop PC (on which the router sits).

If wireless, then the ad hoc PCMCIA card should do the trick, again with a wireless ADSL modem/router. If the laptop travels, this would be the best solution.

Retro-fitting a mini-PCI NIC ($25?) might be problematic (RJ45 present?), IF you can still find one!

Setting up the ADSL connection is relatively easy these days. Once the NIC is installed, select auto everything for its TCP/IP settings. Connect to the router, run Internet Explorer & follow the router's set-up instructions. You will be asked for the ISP user name & password, etc. Don't forget to save the config in the router!

For the memory size, if your friend can get into the control panel (system), she should be able to tell you what processor & how much RAM. If they just want to surf a bit & do E-mail, a huge amount of RAM is not necessary.

HTH,

OK, here's the deal.

It's an Inspiron 8000 running Win 2000.

According to the online documentation, it supports two Type I or Type II cards, or one Type III card:

<snip>
Modem/network connectors: Optional factory-configurable RJ-11 and RJ-45 ports for mini-PCI modem/network controller (I don't think she has an RJ-45, but it's slow going with her finding this out. I'm assuming no for the time being)

<snip>

So: Do you think she will have problems trying to set up DSL? I know she needs a DSL modem for a wired connection, a router for a wireless, and a network card for wired or wireless. Are there other things? Does she need a lot of memory? Can someone recommend the best card for her?
