Thanks, That explains it very well, and sort of is what I was
expecting from what I had tried -- things that did not work...
I'll consider that it was a "one way" change, until (if ever)
I do a "bare metal" reinstall...

Replacing the MBR will do nothing to the startup code, except, perhaps point
the system to a different partition
If you have to fix anything later, then it will probably be a Recovery, or
perhaps even a re-install because of whatever damage was done to the system
that would also have got the startup modules.
