Are such firewalls effective? I vaguely recall some motherboards have a sort of
anti-virus component (in the BIOS?) although it may have limited utility.

Generally these are NOT the same. In the old days of yesterday all one could turn on was the HD's MBR protection but no longer as there is DEP [data execution prevention] that you can read more about at Control Panel\System\Properties\Advanced\Performance Settings button\Data Execution Prevention\How does it work? "This is a hardware-based technology designed to mark memory locations as non-executable" & is available only with the AMD64 CPUs.

FWIW this is just another place where AMD kicks the pants off of Intel. DEP & nVidia's nForce firewall are 2 different kinds of security precautions. IIRC nVidia had this out before Xp had Sp2 with it's Security Center.

This particular mombo uses the nVidia nForce 3 chipset which you can read more about here <http://www.nvidia.com/page/nf3.html>.

NVIDIA Firewall:
A high-performance, network-level firewall, NVIDIA Firewall protects your PC from intruders by filtering unauthorized traffic. Integrated into NVIDIA nForce3 MCPs with NVIDIA Gigabit Ethernet, it provides professional-grade traffic inspection capabilities, advanced management features--remote access, configuration, and monitoring--and is easy to use and setup via a user friendly wizard.

When I ordered the above mombo it came with an nVidia CDrom as well as one from Gigabyte & one can always download the latest bios, drivers & etc from Gigabyte. Unlike many mombo manufacturer pages one can find a link to these from the product description page as opposed to going to the [lack of] Support page that the others provide.
