I simply followed the layout for the memory slots. Asus specifies
where to put:
You act like Asus is the only one with this layout. I won't tell
Gigabyte that my memory layout is the same as an Asus board otherwise
they may drop the memory layout & the mombo.
Instruction #6 addresses your question, "Three DDR DIMM's installed
into any three memory sockets will function in single channel mode.
Dah, 3 sticks can NOT run in Dual Channel mode as one can NOT cut a
stick in half.
Ok, so I had 4 1024's in there for a few minutes and it read only
3+GB. Instruction #5 covers this, "When all four sockets are
populated with 1GB DIMM's (total 4GB), the system may detect onl 3+
GB (a little less than 4 GB) due to the Southbridge resource allocation."
Ah but there is a 3g limit imposed by Windows & one has to modify the
boot.ini file. You might want to search the MSKB as this applies to
Xp, 2k & 2k3.
So what do you recommend?
Go back to 2048 MB so I can run dual channel with one set?
Heck, yes. It's more than enough.
Go back up to 3+ GB populating all 4 sockets with 1024's so I can
retain dual channel mode?
Only if you're working on large videos in which case use the /3GB
switch in the boot.ini. Also before I ran 4g I'd make sure that I
used 2 pair of matched memory just for that purpose not odd sticks of 1024.
Thanks for helping me to reason on the single vs. dual channel
issues and sending me back to the Asus book
Most techs go back to RTFM &/or search the Internet before asking
questions in a semi public forum.
