and while you're at it, find all the latest driver for the LT & store them
on the disk.

I would take the drive out of the laptop and hook it to a desktop and copy
the data off before trying anything else.

BTW while the drive is on the desktop (if you go this route) run a drive
diagnostic program on the drive to be sure it's not going south.
