PART 2 - original email was too long for the list.
See below for my comments on PC-Cillin, this was sent to my circle of
consultants and other geeks.
Well, I've been running Trend's PC-Cillin Internet Security 2006 on my
laptop
for the past few months and have it running on about a dozen client's
machines.
I really like the fact that the PIS2k6 is not a resource PIG like Norton
Internet Security, I've seen so many problems with NIS and Norton Consumer
products in general, that I actively recommend clients use anything else.
I also like the fact that PIS2k6 doesn't pop up a blizzard of
warnings/questions for normal daily use like Zone Alarm, however....
Here are some things I don't like about it, largerly this is a direct
correlation to the capabilities I am used to with Zone Alarm Security Suite
and to a lesser extent NIS.
1) Firewall rule customization is rudimentary, it does all the basic stuff
but doesn't offer advanced filtering.
2) No way to save (export/import) settings - THIS ROYALLY SUCKS!
3) Can't upgrade with interversion numbers and keep settings - THIS ALSO
ROYALLY SUCKS. Basically you have to fully uninstall the version of 2006
you
have and then do a fresh install of the new subversion of 2006.
4) Older versions don't have "standard" functionaility - Perfect example, I
am running on my laptop with the "office network" profile, which sets the
security level to medium, in that configuration doing a traceroute from my
laptop gets blocked by the firewall. If you try to adjust the firewall
exceptions list, it doesn't have an option to allow icmp traffic, at least
not in the version of PIS2k6 I was running. See point below.
5) Consumer tech support seems a bit clueless - I Spoke with Trend Consumer
support and was told by one tech that the later version he was running
allowed one to create an exception for icmp traffic, he was going to email
me
the link for details and how to backup and restore my settings after
ugrading. . A half hour later still no email, I called back and was told
the
previous tech had spoken to level 2 support and was advised the new version
wouldn't fix my problem. I asked the new tech to send me the info anyways.
Got his email quickly, it had no info on backing up settings, I asked him
about that and he said PIS2k6 doesn't have that capability.
6) No update notification for new program versions. Norton handles this
automatically via liveupdate while Zone Alarm alerts you with a popup.
7) Network admin mode is fairly rudimentary, you can't adjust firewall
rules
on another machine for example.
8) Uninstallation leaves lots of files around. When you install it extracts
the install files to (by default) a directory under c:\program files. After
uninstalling the current version it does not remove these files (approx
100mb
worth). Then it also doesn't remove the program directory, there were lots
of
files still left there, didn't check the size though.
9) New version still does not support ICMP exception, so only way to allow
traceroute is to drop firewall security to low, which allows pretty much
everything. <sigh>
Zone Alarm Suite is looking good again.
10) Trend Explicitly states in the product info that they do not support
ANY
VPN clients working with PC-Cillin, what century are they living in?!?!??!
Well, enough ranting for today.
Some additional beefs
1) the antispam solution that integrates with outlook/outlook express is a
separate installation from the main program
2) the antispam solution ONLY runs on XP, if you have 2000 or 98, you are
SOL.
Honestly I an considering going back to Zone Alarm Security Suite for my
own
use, Trend will generally be fine for most of my clients.
