Boot with F8 as if you were going to safe mode, but instead of safe mode, select "Enable VGA Mode".
Then login and choose the resolution you want. It will stick. The problem is that the new monitor cannot support the resolution that the old one did... Now, if I were cleverer [and had been thinking], I'd have gone into each of my accounts and changed the screen resolution to the one appropriate for the new monitor... But I didn't... So next time I boot the system will *try* to come up with a resolution that my monitor can't support. What'll happen at that point? The old monitor is not ready-at-hand, so isn't very easy to put it back in so I can change the resolutions, so if possible I'd like to muddle through directly with the new monitor... will this all work or should I temporarily go back to the old monitor?
