Happened again today system Ok but no Internet....
Found out this time that the ISP had authentication problems but ONLY
today so...
Here is what I did.
ISP said get DNS auto I said no way as it's worked Ok for 2 years.
Changed LLC-based connection to VC-based (probably reset on router
reboot.)
Went to each machine and again manually configured the address with sub
mask and router gateway and added the DNS servers addresses
When ISP got back all computer booted OK and have held their addresses
and seem Ok.
However, I think I might have the server's Hdd going down and that might
be the root of the problem (or might not) Twice no three times on a
simple reboot XP has decided that there is something wrong with the OS
Hdd as it checked it and recovered "something" into files or whatever.
Next job - swap Hdd and see if anything improves.
Thanks for the pointers - they did help and did point me in the right
direction.
What concerns me that after 2 years without any trouble suddenly it
needed all this reconfig.
