I figured I can do that... but I think this might be the answer I was 
looking for:

That it might be a problem with the printer drivers... My problem in 
large part is that I hadn't a clue *what* could cause that kind of 
behavior.  I guess I could have /should have guessed that since it can 
*display* the PNG file, whatever libraries it needs to parse the file 
format and figure out what's there are all OK, so the only link left in 
the chain is the printer drivers...
