Have you tried copying the first cd into the windows parition area, then doing
a "network" install? That way it shouldn't require anything like as much space
(as far as the installer is concerned) but it'll be bigger overall.
As an aside, I did a pretty typical install with about 700mb free and it
worked fine for me...
