To Doc, and to all the folks whose birthdays I’ve missed so far this year: Du,
du liegst mir im Herzen. Thinking of you all tonight on the screened back porch
as the early evening light takes on a soft golden glow and the shadows lengthen
(we know from the way the light hits an oak tree, as if looking at a sundial:
time to get back to the Barn, dinner is not a destination). And thinking of
all you emailers of funny and thoughtful and poetic best wishes, and you
non-emailers but readers out there — I’m so grateful each one of you has been a
part of my life, even as a distant Winedale cousin. These occasional waves of
emails make me smile, and laugh, and think, and feel a pang, and remind me of
the bond we share thanks to you Jim Ayres and all the many other folks whose
hard work and big hearts have made our ferocious play together possible, again
and again. (More, I prithee… more….)

So cheers to you all — away with the joint-stools, remove the court-cupboard,
look to the plate, and good thou, save me a piece of the marchpane…!

Love,

Clayton S.

There was a star danced. No doubt.
Thanks for lighting the way for so many of us.
