Say it ain’t so, Robert! Can it really be 35 years? What a run. That means for more than half my life, I’ve had the pleasure of looking forward to picking up the Chronicle each week and knowing your voice would be in there somewhere in the Arts section. I think you and I were still housemates in the pre-“Slacker” era when I received my first Robert Faires review…! (I still remember each one vividly. Yours and John Bustin’s.) You’ve seen and covered so much in those 35 years, and observed and commented on so many remarkable changes. I hope you’ll pull together some of your favorite pieces for a printed collection, or consider writing a history of the arts in Austin.
The Chronicle won’t be as fun, smart, or interesting without you. Thanks for all you’ve done, especially to help foster a high standard for in-depth arts criticism and reporting in this community, and for always celebrating the value of the arts and championing local artists. It made a difference, for a long long time. Toasting you with my morning tea.
