Say it ain’t so, Robert!

Can it really be 35 years? What a run. That means for more than half my life,
I’ve had the pleasure of looking forward to picking up the Chronicle each week
and knowing your voice would be in there somewhere in the Arts section. I
think you and I were still housemates in the pre-“Slacker” era when I received
my first Robert Faires review…! (I still remember each one vividly. Yours
and John Bustin’s.) You’ve seen and covered so much in those 35 years, and
observed and commented on so many remarkable changes. I hope you’ll pull
together some of your favorite pieces for a printed collection, or consider
writing a history of the arts in Austin.

The Chronicle won’t be as fun, smart, or interesting without you. Thanks for
all you’ve done, especially to help foster a high standard for in-depth arts
criticism and reporting in this community, and for always celebrating the value
of the arts and championing local artists. It made a difference, for a long
long time. Toasting you with my morning tea. Cheers and enjoy your next
adventure!

PS And thanks Madge for sharing this bittersweet news and for keeping an eye
out for the -30- column. I have a feeling I’m going to need a box of tissues
handy when I read it.

Robert's wife Barbara Chisholm Faires and his daughter Rosalind hosted a
surprise toast for Robert this evening at the Vortex Theatre in Austin, and
Robert was genuinely surprised and delighted. Robert is leaving his position as
the Arts Editor for The Austin Chronicle after 35 years! You really cannot
overstate his contribution to the Austin Arts community in those years. His
-30- column will run on Thursday in the Chronicle. I'm looking forward to it
and will post here.

So proud that we share Robert in this Winedale community and grateful for the
ways he has used his platform to highlight Shakespeare at Winedale over the
years.

I'm really looking forward to reading what's next from you, Robert. Cheers and
congratulations!
