Another thing to mention is that I tried to setup this dongle both with and
without the firmware module.
That is, in one case I have these in loader.conf:
legal.realtek.license_ack=1
rtwn-rtl8821aufw_load="YES"
And in the other I have them connected out.
I did not notice much difference, both configurations behave "erratically".
One difference is that with the firmware I also see this kernel message on every
association attempt:
kernel: rate2ridx: called; unknown rate (0)
