We have talked about "long-distance" networking on this group and I would encourage more.
There are also a treatment on it by Adam Engst and Glenn Fleishman in their book "Wireless Networking Starter Kit" (http://www.wireless-starter-kit.com). I did a session on it at the last LISA/USENIX (http://www.lns.com/papers/lisa02) and am hoping to do a more extended on for an unannounced conference coming up in June. Folks may also want to check out Clif Cox's excellent report "Bhutan Migration to New Technologies [Wireless VoIP] Mission Report" (http://www.bhutan-notes.com/clif/) on construction of a number of long distance networks in that country. Then, of course, Dave Hughes has been doing this sort of work for years. You can see his pages at: http://wireless.oldcolo.com/ He is currently involved in a NSF grant on how to get remote data in the field back via wireless.
