If the router part was configured for DSL access, it was most likely attempting to do PPPoE on the WAN port, which is needed to connect to the DSL modem....

Subject: [BAWUG] RE: Can you make a wireless access point out of a wireless router

If only I had this post in January!  I pulled my hair out trying to configure a wireless router to connect a wireless client to a wired LAN.  I got it working doing what you have suggessted.  My question is, why wouldn't it work using the WAN port?

Yes it is possible with most (all?) wireless routers.

*** Simple guide to converting wireless router to AP ***
General: Just ignore the WAN port on the router.

1. Turn off DHCP server on "wireless AP"
2. Give it a static IP address (outside the range of your other
router's
DHCP address space)
3. Plug AP's LAN port into LAN port of wireless router

Now you can configure the AP for SSID, WEP, etc.
