In researching this further, I ran across this:

and it appears he simply replaced the feed of a cheap 24dBi dish with a 
homemade 3.5 turn helix feed, hence giving high(er) gain CP, abet still not off 
the shelf, but in the coffee can antenna fabrication skill level.
