In defense of Cacti, it's not a "UNIX guru" that you have to be (Cacti installs on Windows), but you have to make sure your web and database stack are working properly (e.g. Apache / MySQL) to get it installed. Once it's installed, then you just need to understand a few rrdtool concepts, some MIB/SNMP stuff (if applicable), and read through the documentation. If you'd like, there are tons of great 3rd party plugins for it.
