I spent several hours last night and today analyzing the BTOP/BIP applications. WiMAX and Fiber are big winners with 307 WiMAX applications requesting $1.6B and 181 fiber applications requesting $3.7B. There are a total of 1130 last mile applications requesting $14.2B. This analysis is based on the information provide in the project description and not all of the descriptions listed the last mile technology. In the next couple of weeks, NTIA will publish the executive summaries for the applications which should shed more light on the projects. I downloaded all of the applications into Excel and added a column with the Last Mile technology. Send me e-mail if you would like a copy of the spreadsheet. Four tables summarizing the last mile applications are at the bottom of this list. Highlights - Total of 1130 last mile projects requesting $14.2B. - WiMAX was the leading last mile technology with 307 projects requesting $1.6B. - Last mile fiber projects requested the most funds with 181 projects requesting $3.7B. - The largest grant application was submitted by RADGOV, INC requesting $938,187,772 for public computer centers which is 13% of the entire $7.2B for all three rounds. Also, the total amount allocated to Public Computer Center projects in this round is only $50M. - Aircell is requesting $65M to deploy "Inflight Internet service in the largely unserved U.S. airspace via Aircell's ATG commercial broadband network." - Digital Bridge submitted 158 applications for WiMAX networks for a total of $154M grant funding and $98M in loans for a total request of $252M. - Glen Martin Inc submitted an application for $160M to deploy "two thousand miles of 10 GigE service throughout Missouri." They also submitted 23 applications requesting a total of $252M to deploy wireless (probably Motorola Canopy) broadband in rural Missouri. - Castillo Technologies, LLC submitted 17 applications requesting a total of $51M for wireless broadband in rural Arizona. - Jedai Network, Inc. submitted 13 applications requesting $45M for deploying broadband in rural Georgia. - KeyOn submitted 11 applications for $152M to deploy WiMAX at 3.65GHz in Nebraska, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, South Dakota, Nevada, Missouri, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Arkansas and Oklahoma. - Flow Mobile submitted 112 applications requesting $23M to deploy "a 4G-like mobile broadband WiFi network." - Clear Talk submitted 8 applications requesting $386M to deploy software defined radios initially supporting EVDO Rev. A and upgradeable to WiMAX/LTE. - Phalanx Technology Holdings, LLC submitted 5 applications requesting $141M for a fiber network including $92M for Fiber to the home in eastern Iowa. - Tower Stream submitted 17 applications requesting $123M to deploy WiMAX. - Utopian Wireless Corporation submitted 40 applications requesting $50M to deploy WiMAX. - UTAH TELECOMMUNICATION OPEN INFRASTRUCTURE AGENCY submitted 3 applications requesting $57M to deploy "Fiber to the Premises" in Utah. Finally, my favorite project description comes from 21st Century Communications, Inc. who is applying for an even $50,000,000 - "Collaboration with Project Kick-Start for Broadband Public Computer Center Expansion [William - add description]."
