Well, certainly not Wifi that you could deploy in the US without the FCC
getting a bit interested in it ;)

There are microwave bridges running in the 5.8ghz range that can run
80-100 km available commercially. However, this requires line of sight,
and does not use the 802.11 standard.

I just wanted Gabriel to see the maximum anyone had successfully
attempted. I believe Gabriel's first post was looking to cover a 450 -
500 km distance, which is unfortunately not possible within 802.11

Does anyone know of any projects using WiMax (802.16) yet to start some
distance records with that technology?

Lets see...

A 6 WATT power amplifier feeding a 2.4 meter dish (that's the area of
FIVE king sized beds), not to mention a high altitude balloon, helium
and all the launch gear, plus GPS tracking systems for the antennas and
presumably clearance from government and military authorities to drift
around at commercial air-space altitudes in a random direction.

I make that an output of nearly 90dBm and a receive sensitivity of
probably -140dBm. Allow, say 10dB noise margin and you have a mind
blowing 220dB headroom to play with. Compared to a free space loss of
'only' 150dB for the 315Km link and you wonder just how far they COULD
have gone.

BUT... Can you still call that WI-FI?

:-)
