Brian,
I left out an important instruction. You obviously have an Ethernet cable coming from your D-Link router. I'm guessing you have it plugged into the Wan port on the WRT54G. If so, you need to move it to a switch port on the 54G. You only use the Wan port when going to a DSL or cable modem and in some other limited applications. When you are using the 54G behind a router/switch it is just another device to the D-Link not another router. I just checked the Linksys support page and they have what you need in their Knowledge Base http://www.linksys.com/support/default.asp Search for the phrase Connecting <http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_f aqid=138&p_created=1084204449&p_sid=R7kIs3nh&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J 0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MTU5JnBfc2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9YV9pZCZwX3Byb2R fbHZsMT0xJnBfcHJvZF9sdmwyPTIwJnBfY2F0X2x2bDE9MTUmcF9jYXRfbHZsMj0mcF9zY2ZfbGF uZz0xJnBfcGFnZT0z&p_li=> Two WRT54G Routers Together and that will give you the instructions you need. In the intro part of the answer it will tell you this procedure can be used for non-Linksys routers as well. Read it through and you'll get the idea. As to connection to the other computers, turn off the firewalls on your computers on your local net until you get things working. On my 54G I run a third party Linux release for the 54G and it's a little different than the "stock" software. On mine, in the wireless basic settings I have the option under "wireless mode:" for AP, client or Ad Hoc, but yours might be different. Also, in the Setup/Advanced Routing that I believe you have leave the operating mode as Gateway. Hope this helps.. Each step gets you closer... I've got things working right now, but not the way I would like. At the moment, the laptop can get on the net, but can't see the other computers in my home network. Same workgroup, same subnet, but no joy. How do I go about configureing the wireless as an access point? I've looked in the book but can't seem to find it. Will look again. Configure the WRT45G as an access point. It doesn't need to be a router. Turn on the DHCP on the D-Link and let the WRT45G get its setup from the D-Link. Turn off the DHCP on the WRT45G and let the D-Link's DHCP serve all the devices whether wired or wireless. If you need a device to have a static address, set it. I have an existing wired network (D-Link DI-704P) that I wish to add a wireless (Lynksys WRT54G) to. The currentl plan is to leave the existing wired network in place (currently in the basement, below ground level) and mount the wireless router on the main floor. I'm having some difficulty getting the wireless router onto the net. So, a short history: Verified internet connection by one of the wired computers Good wireless connection between the router and my laptop The wired router "sees" the wireless as evidenced by the lights on the wired router I've got a little bit of networking understanding, probably just enough to be dangerous. :) The DHCP on the wired router is turned off, and static IP address have been assigned. The IP address of the wireless has been changed, and added to the wired router to allow access, as well the mac address has been added. I have set the gateway for the wireless router to the IP address of the wired router, the subnet mask is the same, and I've entered DNS numbers as well to no avail. Somewhere I have it configured wrong. Any and all ideas greatly appreciated.
