My apologies, the exact wording of the error message is "Unsupported
codec".

The capture I'm using is the example provided at http://
wiki.wireshark.org/SampleCaptures?
action=AttachFile&do=get&target=rtp_example.raw.gz

I just poked a little more at it and it appears only one of the
streams messes up:
If I choose
Statistics -> RTP -> Stream analysis
and then export both channels to .au, it works just fine. (and the
file can be played just fine.)

Statistics -> RTP -> Show all streams -> analyze
an then exporting, repeatedly tells me "Can't save reversed
direction: Unsupported Codec", no matter which stream I select as
"forward"
(this was the route I usually went )

The codec reads "ITU-T G.711 PCMA".
