I don't do that any more, but have done that before. You just have to watch out for any platform specific code, like any external actions that are windows only, or file paths, where you don't use the witango path commands, but use a full path, like "\\fs1\somedir\somefile"

Our new php env has remote debugging, so its not necessary, but one thing we have on our old witango dev environment as you have seen, is a staging server that updates automatically on SVN commit. So its a bit more work, but still works good when away, you commit, test, alter code, commit, test, and work that way.

I need to set up a development environment on my MacBook, so I can try to get some work done during a lengthy commute.

I'm leaning toward installing fedora/mysql/apache/witango on a Parallels Virtual Machine, so I have the exact same environment for deployment and development.

But it occurs to me that I could also install Witango server within the X.4 environment and not need the virtual machine. Any thoughts on that approach.
