Lots of good tangential questions below. I'll try to provide my current view of the world:
1. WiX v3 is under development and will not be "stable" for an unknown period of time. There may be breaking changes and new bugs and all kinds of churn. This is much like what WiX v2 has been like over the last year and a half. 2. WiX v2 is driving towards *extremely* stable. There are no more breaking changes expected in the "core toolset" (candle, light, lit, dark, wix.dll, winterop.dll) and we are very critical of each bug fix. This the WiX toolset version that people should be putting into their build process. 3. The two versions are expected to co-exist for a long while. I just hope we make no more changes to WiX v2 soon and WiX v3 adoption should only be done by those willing to file bugs... <smile/> 4. When a WiX v3 version is released to SourceForge then I will try to do work to make it clear what version is what. I haven't evaluated the new SourceForge UI enough to know the best way to do that. 5. Your point about the "Latest News" is a good point. I'll try to get better news items up there to make it clearer what is going on. "News" was so hidden (and more web-UI manipulations <sigh/>) that I didn't bother doing a lot with it. 6. The question Bob proposes below is whether he should make a breaking change to the WixUI to enable localization in WiX v2. He will obviously be making these changes in WiX v3 (where there are more features to make this behave even better). -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of DEÁK JAHN, Gábor Sent: Monday, November 28, 2005 10:16 AM To: WiX-devs Subject: Re: [WiX-devs] RFC: WixUI localization changes On Sun, 27 Nov 2005 17:34:07 -0800, Bob Arnson wrote: Bob, > That's one for. Anyway, even if our votes cancel out each other, I wonder what our options are? Either accepting the command line changes or not having any localization (of this type, at least) in 2.0 at all? If this is the alternative all right, this might convince many of us to accept command line changes more easily... I still can't see really clear about these version issues. Will 3.0 be shortly released (not the ClickThrough, the complete toolset) as a stable download so that it would be worthwhile modifying the tutorial now, adding the changes in the scheme and the UI? Or will version 2.0 stay with us for some time to come? If 3.0 remains a developer-only tool until it becomes mature, then I won't worry about it right now. But if the two version will co-exist for some time to come, I wouldn't really like to fork the tutorial. But even without thinking about the tutorial, I wouldn't consider this scenario very wise for the newcomers. By the way, I don't know when SourceForge changed its looks but it seems to be different to when I visited it for the last time. I found the Latest News section very misguiding. Either we should suppress this section or make sure there are newer entries as well because, even as I'm supposed to find my way in WiX after all these months, I was puzzled first to see outdated version numbers and dates on the opening screen. > Probably. But then I'm not an L10N expert. You're still light years ahead of me, I had to look up what on earth L10N actually is... Is it really so complicated? I thought more like the usual list of strings, as it appears in UISample. I'm not really sure the situation calls for more complicated frameworks, I've been able to localize my installers with this approach without the slightest problem. By the way, I wanted to mention it earlier: I don't particularly insist on getting each mail in many copies. As we all monitor the mailing lists, is CC-ing to everybody contributing to a thread really necessary? :-))) Bye, Gábor ------------------------------------------------------------------- DEÁK JAHN, Gábor -- Budapest, Hungary E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc.
