Hi little.forrest, I can't answer your question (what does repair do) directly, but here's how I'd find out. The first step is to turn on logging for windows installer. You can either do this when you run the MSI (assuming you're directly running the MSI file, not using control panel) or use a registry setting to turn on logging globally. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/223300 for details. After you turn on logging, do a repair operation and go look at the log to see what specific actions it took. IF you're brave, you can just open the log file in Notepad. I prefer to use the log file analyzer that Microsoft provides in the Windows SDK (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa372811%28VS.85%29.aspx). It still takes some thinking to figure out what's happening. Maybe start by clicking the "States" button to see the feature and component states.
