the old code doesn't give a flying f*ck about most error conditions 
most nowhere.

an interrupted op in this context is not fatal "error", much like a 
"condition", so to speak, and it can be attempted again with no ill 
effects.

i faintly remember there's even a quite similar macro in glibc to a 
similar end. *THAT* is ugly.
