This is all very inconvenient. But it is just the way things are in the *ix world. There's too many different approaches, each of which comes along with some nice goodies we want to have, but the result is a bloated system with lots of different libraries, frameworks, etc installed and things looking very inconsistent. I really wish I had enough up-to-date and usable GNUstep-based apps to do my daily work. Unfurtunately the project seems to be dying. There's only very few new applications, old applications are no longer maintained etc. The Etoile project, too, progresses very slowly (apart from the fact that there's only very few people who can build the current trunk code, I gave up a few months ago, too little time and too little what I got for it). Yep, this is open source, if nobody invests any time nothing's going to happen. But people don't remain students for all their lives and once you've entered industry and code for a living you don't really want to spend all your spare time coding...
