My Ubuntu desktop machine recently died, so I moved to my Lenovo T-61
laptop. I run it with 2 GB memory and a 2nd VGA (1920x1200) monitor
attached. I was running Windowmaker .92 something, which is what Ubuntu
has in its distribution at this time.
On the old desktop I would occasionally experience the window manager
freezing up on me if I stayed logged into the same session for several
days running. It was annoying, but I really didn't mind. I always
expect software to be temperamental at times. But when I migrated to
the laptop, the freezing behavior started to happen regularly after
being logged in only a few minutes. That is not OK.
I do not have this problem at all running Gnome (echhh...).
So when I saw that Windowmaker was once again under development and
that there were bug fixes out, I thought this might be my answer. I
removed wmaker from Ubuntu and downloaded the new packages recently
listed here. I loaded the i386 packages. Don't know if my T-61 is an
AMD machine or not, and just assumed it wasn't. I figured the i386
packages would be more compatible.
Is there a switch I could install in my .xinitrc or something which
would log wmaker debugging stuff somewhere so I can dig around and see
if there's anything I could do? Any thoughts? Is this a problem with
the big monitor I have attached? I use xrandr to stretch the desktop
across the two screens.
Or should I just dump the T-61 and go to some other brand of hardware?
At this point, I can't use Windowmaker on my T-61.
