Hi Russ, is your T61 equipped with a nVIDIA GPU? Your description appears to hint at a typical hardware issue for this GPU chip, for which not Lenovo but nVIDIA was to blame. Further details can be found here:

I still use two T61 with such Intel graphics, and expect to use them for a few years more to come.
