Hi Russ,

is your T61 equipped with a nVIDIA GPU? Your description appears to hint
at a typical hardware issue for this GPU chip, for which not Lenovo but
nVIDIA was to blame. Further details can be found here:

I was bitten by this very issue twice, and had the machines in warranty
repair before finally replacing the mainboards myself with integrated
graphic based ones. I still use two T61 with such Intel graphics, and
expect to use them for a few years more to come.

T61's are still wonderful machines, as long as they don't have any
nVDIAI GPU. ;)
