To be honest, in many ways we've been dumbing down awfully quickly since the
advent of television (it tells us things and we watch, so little reason to
think, which even radio managed to activiate somewhat). I think media as it
is has a fair amount to do with it. But it may also just be how the most
powerful cultures/empires tend to evolve. It's not too much different than
Romans of circa 2 millenia ago wanting their diversions and blood, except
they didn't have digital nor nearly all the options and 'fun' we've created.
