I feel the SDL move is a very (very very) good choice as it is a much more mature implementation. Have looked at your draft and it seems OK at first glance. Is the idea to provide two drawing backends (SDL/clan)? This would allow a wider support. Pushing further one may imagine a cairo backend (the API seems to be stabilizing well now) with source-SVG maps and teams? Another idea with my poor knowledge of the actual codebase & SDL : will the SDL imp be GL-only based or may it fallback to sprite-only mode for the many ones with no hw accel (for eg: me before I configured correctly my NVidia card ;-) ) ?
