yes, validation sometimes might return "unserious" errors - if one tag is not closed, for example, then the rest will not validate and instead of 1 there will be 21 and etc. I didn't see anything Really horrible on the site to be instantly turned away from it.
 
But I also suspect that in case of the larger company web-site - it's not only the designers' fault, but of those who eventually "maintain" the site and "contribute" to the site.  So the site can become really ugly.  I myself work in an  insurance company  and currently "struggle" for standardization (pretty much on my own :(  ), and know that when you work with a lot of people, it CAN get really complex.  And who knows - maybe they use some kind of CMS, which will make things even worse, like in our case.
 
Besides, my boss recommended this certification to me... but I don't know.  Tell me if there is anything else, besides Adobe.
