Seems there's more to it.
Here's the patch I have right now.  This uses CTRL-M on the widegraph to toggle 
all the controls off/on.  The allows one to gain quite a bit of vertical space 
by hiding controls that are not used very often.With the "old" way the 
ShowControls value always hits the default on reading.With the SettingsGroup it 
reads it correctly.

Hi Mike,

SettinsGroup is a trivial helper class that opens and closes a settings 
group around a set of settings reads or writes. It is not an alternative 
to using QSettings, it works in concert with it.
