For fun...and perhaps for consideration....
Change the signal meter to a true signal meter and remove the slider.
Range is 0-90dB -- You'd want to keep the level at least 30dB (5-6 bits) at 
quiet times perhaps up to 50dB (8-9 bits) if you don't have any big signals 
showing up.  At 90dB you'll be clipping the signal so stay away from that 
level.  At least for my shack I can keep it at 70dB and don't see any clipping 
occurring at all.  Even with some coming in at -01.
This way there is no confusion on how to set your audio and entire dynamic 
range is shown.  Could probably improve this with some color coding to show 
low/high signal levels occurring.
Let the level controls on the waterfall do their own thing.
